Resilience Scale Kit
This scale's creaters, Jenn and Carrie, bring a strong foundation in brain development and resilience science to this work, having both completed the Alberta Family Wellness Initiative Brain Story Certification, along with their education and work experience in both the mental health and addiction field, as well as educational settings. These experiences introduced them to powerful concepts, case studies, and a paper-based version of the resilience scale and with those, they saw an opportunity to make the learning more tangible, engaging, and impactful.
After searching for existing tools, it became clear that there wasn’t a hands-on resource that fully met the needs of facilitators or participants—so they created one. Building on the original resilience scale metaphor from the AFWI, they developed an interactive, adaptable model designed for real-world use in both clinical and organizational settings.
Their hands-on resilience scale transforms abstract ideas into a meaningful, visual experience. Using the red/green box framework, individuals and groups can take inventory of life stressors and supports, while a simple 1–3 rating system helps clarify the level of impact each factor has. They have also introduced a unique feature to the fulcrum, allowing the scale to physically shift based on the skills and abilities a person or group has in place. This added layer helps highlight strengths, identify gaps, and guide next steps—whether that’s informing a clinical treatment plan or shaping organizational strategy.
The kit is designed to be practical, flexible, and easy to implement. It includes the physical scale, weighted discs, a USB with step-by-step instructions, and printable worksheets for both clinical and organizational resilience applications. They have successfully used this tool in individual therapy sessions, personal growth workshops, and professional presentations.
Rooted in research from the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University and inspired by the resilience scale metaphor developed by AFWI and adapted by the Foothills Wellness Collective, this tool bridges science and practice—making resilience visible, measurable, and actionable.
